Aber Falls (or Rhaeadr Fawr in Welsh), is one of the most beautiful and magical waterfalls in Wales! I recently featured the Aber Falls walk in our best waterfalls guide, but after a recent visit to this dreamy place I wanted to go into more detail about the trail and other common questions people asked on our Instagram stories…
Where is Aber Falls?
Aber Falls walk trail can be found around 3km south of a small village on the north Wales coast called Abergwyngregyn.
How high is Aber Falls?
Aber Falls (Rhaeadr Fawr) is around 40 metres high and is formed by Afon Goch that flows down through the beautiful Carneddau foothills.
Is Aber Falls walk easy?
Yes, this is an easy walk for all abilities. There are two paths to chose from on the Aber Falls walk, the standard route and the pushchair one. Both are well pathed and straight forward to follow; it would be hard to get lost on this trail.
How long does it take to walk to Aber Falls?
The sign located in the car park advises that the route should take 1.5 hours. However, if you’re reasonably fit then it should take around 60 minutes of walking, to and from the waterfall (30 minutes each way) and obviously allow for time taken exploring the fall and surrounding area.
Can you swim Aber Falls?
There are no signs that say you can’t swim and we have seen people swimming in Summer. The plunge pool seems fine for a dip, but even during the warmer months the rocks can be slippery and the water cold, so if you do want to test the waters just be careful. Through Autumn and Winter months I would advise to avoid entering the water as the fall can be powerful after heavy rainfall and the risk of danger much greater.
Do you have to pay for Aber Falls?
Aber Falls is free to see, however you will need to pay for parking. The payments taken for parking are used for the upkeep of the area. Parking costs £5 per car.
Aber Falls Car Park
Aber falls car park has two sections, the upper and lower, both with ample parking spaces for visitors. If you are planning a visit to the waterfall, make sure you take £5 in cash as there is no other way to pay for parking. No change is given and the machine only accepts coins.
When is the best time of year to visit?
The falls trail is accessible all year round. However, the best time of year I’d recommend visiting is either October or November. This time of year offers that Autumnal feel and with the heavier rainfall, the waterfalls will be powerful and incredible to see.
Are there toilets at Aber Falls?
There are both Women’s and Men’s toilets available and they are located in the upper car park. There is no fee for using them and they are kept relatively clean and stocked.
Can you take a pram to Aber Falls?
Yes! There is a dedicated walking route for pushchairs and wheelchairs, the route is easily accessible for both. However, in places it can get a little rocky and most of the route up the waterfall is and uphill ascent.
