The North Face presents “Orbayu Free Again”. A feature length film following Belgium climber Siebe Vanhee completing a rare one-day free ascent of the mythical Orbayu (8c /500m) on Naranjo De Bulnes in the Picos de Europa National Park, Spain.
The film features legendary Basque brothers Iker and Eneko Pou, who first established the route in 2009, discussing the physical toll the climb takes and the delicate nature of the surface which requires expert precision. In accomplishing his goal Siebe made history in becoming only the seventh person to climb Orbayu.
The personal challenge tested the resilience of the Belgian climber and took him out of his comfort zone. After working the route for six days, Siebe spent the next four relentlessly pursuing the crux pitch which caused damage to his skin and forced him to take some rest days to heal. With taped up fingertips and several sleepless nights, Siebe set-off on his first send attempt from the ground, managing to free-climb all of the hard pitches on his first try of the day.
Siebe Vanhee:
“I was super nervous and questioned my ability to handle a route of this complexity. This really was the maximum level to how far I could go. It was really nice to be back in the mountains and what an incredible climb! The feelings at the top were amazing, I live for this adventure climbing and am grateful to the Pou brothers for their help in mastering Orbayu.”
